A message from our School's Director

Welcome to the School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies (ISAT) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale!

In 2003, the School of ISAT was created through the merger of four academic programs in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts: Electronic Systems Technologies (EST), Information Systems Technologies (IST), Technical Resource Management (TRM), and the off-campus program: Fire Service Management (FSM).

The Electronic Systems Technologies (EST) program prepares students for careers in many industries requiring applied electronics skills. The program offers concentration options in Automation & Control, Biomedical Equipment and Networking & Telecommunications though graduates find employment in many other industries as technologists and engineers.

The Electronics Management Specialization is also available on-campus and off-campus at select military bases for those with experience wishing to pursue management goals.

Information Systems Technologies (IST) is a baccalaureate degree major designed to prepare students for careers in a wide variety of work settings that rely on computerized information systems technologies to accomplish organizational goals. The curriculum recognizes that graduates must have good computer application skills and enterprise systems perspective as well as a strong understanding of underlying principles of both information technologies and business practices. In a snapshot, the IST core and elective courses are offered in the areas of databases, systems analysis and design, computer programming, and Web-based software applications development.  Additionally, the IST advanced curriculum provides the student preparing for a career in network administration and security with the opportunity to experience, through an accredited curriculum certified by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS), the high level of complexity in network engineering and the challenge of advanced design, development and implementation.

The IST program also offers a complete online degree program with select group of classes, providing place-bound students the opportunity to take IST courses via web-based instruction.

The Technical Resource Management (TRM) program builds upon an individual’s educational and occupational experiences with courses selected to meet technical career objectives to prepare our graduates to assume roles as team leaders, supervisors, or managers in their fields of expertise.  The curriculum is designed to develop foundational knowledge and insights to leading personnel in such areas as quality control, labor-management relations, finance, business law, statistical analysis, and project management in order to direct sustainable business enterprises in an ever-changing business climate.

In addition to the three on-campus degree programs of ISAT, the Fire Service Management (FSM) program is offered through Off-Campus Academic Programs. FSM is dedicated to meeting the educational needs of the fire service professional and is designed for those individuals who already possess an Associate’s degree with a background in the fire service. The FSM program is an accredited IFSAC program and a long time participant in the Federal Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) program.

To sustain our students’ competitive edge in their career development with hands-on skills, the school is equipped with an array of state-of-the-art learning and teaching laboratories for the EST, IST, and TRM programs, such as the 8000 square feet, handicapped accessible EST Lab, Networking and Information Security Lab, Enterprise Resources Management Systems Lab, and Computer Learning Labs.  ISAT emphasizes laboratory and field experiences at all levels of coursework with active interactions between small groups of students and faculty.  Incorporating experiential learning methods and real-world business settings, our students are effectively engaged in both individual and team-based laboratory and field-based projects.

Keep going and keep growing.  If you are ready for a challenging and energizing career with extraordinary opportunities and payback, I cordially invite you to become part of the school on a journey to excellence.  Take your time to explore our website to find out what we can offer for you to gain the competitive advantage to be successful in today's job market. Don’t hesitate to contact me at shihcs@siu.edu or give me a call at (618) 453-7266.  Look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
