Information Systems Technologies is a
baccalaureate degree major designed to prepare students for careers in a
wide variety of work settings that rely on end-user computerized
information technologies to accomplish organizational goals at the
school's level. The curriculum recognizes that end users must have good
computer application skills as well as an understanding of the
principles of organizations and systems, including an awareness of
technological, economic, political, social, and cultural factors. Many
courses require significant hands-on computer activities related
to applications software, networking communications, and computer
troubleshooting and maintenance. Students may also choose five courses
from an approved list to reflect their personal interests in Information
Systems Technologies.
Students entering the Information Systems
Technologies degree must be able to keyboard at a competency level
adequate enough to complete a variety of computer related tasks and
assignments (generally considered at 30 wpm or above.) Significant
computer resources are available to students in the program for
instructional purposes and for completion of assignments. The courses
are based on a nationally recognized model curriculum, Organizational
and End-user Information Systems by the Organizational Systems
Research Association (OSRA). Graduates of this program will meet the
continuing needs of business and industry for personnel to use computer
systems technologies within organizations utilizing end-user information
systems. They will be able to supervise the planning and implementation
of information systems in work/office environments, and to deal with
people, procedures, and equipment resources of companies in this country
or abroad.

Web Based Major Delivery
The IST degree consists of 100, 200, 300,
and 400 division courses. The lower level (100 and 200 numbers) should
be taken before the higher level courses. Southern Illinois University
Carbondale delivers only the 300 and 400 division IST courses in the
online environment. Therefore, the online student must have satisfied
certain prerequisites prior to taking designated Southern Illinois
University Carbondale IST online courses.
Web based delivery at Southern Illinois
University Carbondale means:
- You will receive general
instructional materials for each course when the registration
process is complete. It is your responsibility to contact each
instructor with an email message so that your user identification
and password can be assigned giving you access to the course
(Interface used is WebCT).
- Weekly deadlines are posted and must
be followed in order to succeed. You must follow the assignment and
test schedules of each course. Each faculty member will provide
dates and procedures for completion of work.
- You will complete class activities
in a different manner and time format.
- Grading procedures and all policies
are followed as stated in the Southern Illinois University
Carbondale Undergraduate Catalog.
Prerequisites Required
- A minimum of 2.0 GPA on Southern
Illinois University Carbondale's 4.0 scale for all prior
post-secondary course work.
- Satisfactory completion of
prerequisite courses
- Ability to keyboard at 30 wpm or

Students enrolled in IST web-based
delivery courses are expected to have a basic knowledge of microcomputer
operating systems and of various types of software. They will also be
expected to have access to, as well as be able to, use the hardware and
software described below. Due to the rapid rate of change in technology,
it is anticipated that hardware and software requirements will be
upgraded on a regular basis.
